2018 MORE Justice Nehemiah Action Assembly

On April 23rd more than 1,250 Richland and Lexington County residents from more than 30 congregations came together to do justice! We presented on our two chosen problem areas - mental health and education (specifically around excessive suspensions/expulsions) - and pressed for clear commitments to take action to improve the lives of the mentally ill and kids in our community.

With the power of organized people we won commitments from local law enforcement leaders Sheriff Leon Lott (of RCSD) and Police Chief Skip Holbrook (of CPD) to ensure that ALL officers are certified in Crisis Intervention Training by April of 2021 and we won commitments from Mayor Steve Benjamin as well as several members of Columbia and West Columbia City Council and Richland and Lexington County Council to take first steps to establish an accredited Clubhouse in our area.

One school board member (of the fourteen making up Richland One and Two) came to address the gathered community on issues of Education. Neither Superintendent chose to participate.

We are excited about the commitments won and remain steadfast and undeterred in the face of challenges. We will press forward, because we want MORE Justice!
